Configure UTM Tracking in Your Organization Setting
Overview
UTM tracking, or UTM parameters/codes, is a valuable technique for monitoring and analyzing website traffic. Originally developed by Google Analytics, it involves adding unique parameters to URLs. By integrating UTM codes with AfterShip SMS and email, you can transmit data to your analytics tool, such as Google Analytics, every time a recipient clicks on a link in an email or SMS.

Key UTM parameters
Key UTM parameters include:
- utm_source: Identifies the source of the incoming traffic
- utm_medium: Specifies the medium responsible for generating the traffic
- utm_campaign: Pinpoints the specific marketing campaign or promotion associated with the link
- utm_content: Permits the differentiation of various versions or components within your email or SMS
- utm_term: Typically designates the keywords employed, often useful for paid advertising
Steps to configure UTM tracking
- Log into your AfterShip SMS admin account
- Navigate to Settings > UTM tracking

- Feel free to add or remove UTM parameters and set up their values
- You can also create custom UTM parameters

AfterShip UTM parameter value options
UTM parameters offer various value options, including dynamic values, static values, and custom values. Here's a breakdown of each:
Dynamic Values
These values are automatically adjusted based on the selected message type. For instance, if you choose "message type" as the value of utm_medium, your SMS links will contain utm_medium=sms, while email links will include utm_medium=email.
Static Values
These values remain consistent across all messages, providing uniformity. However, you have the flexibility to choose different static values for specific campaigns and flows.
Custom Values
Custom values offer personalized options and are ideal for cases where you prefer a non-default static value provided by AfterShip.
How to enable UTM tracking in email and SMS
To activate UTM tracking in your AfterShip email or SMS, follow these simple steps:
- Open the AfterShip email or SMS editor
![]()
![]()
- Navigate to Settings and find the UTM tracking toggle button
- Enable the toggle button to activate UTM tracking
Once UTM tracking is enabled for email and SMS, the global settings configuration will be automatically applied to the current message. You can further customize the default parameters or add new ones.
