How to Offer Free Shipping During Checkout

Overview


Free shipping is a feature available on AfterShip Personalization that allows you to offer customers free shipping on checkout upsells and cross-sells. The solution is compatible with Shopify’s checkout extension architecture.


You can enable and set up a free shipping offer in AfterShip Personalization admin. To activate free shipping on product recommendations during checkout, simple modifications are required in the Shopify checkout editor.

  • Free shipping offer is exclusive of taxes, discounts, and shipping fees
  • Product recommendations and free shipping offers can be displayed together on the checkout page, provided both are added to the Shopify checkout editor

Free shipping offer setup


  1. Go to Smart solutions > Checkout in your AfterShip Personalization admin


If you've not installed AfterShip Personalization application on Shopify, refer to this guide for step-by-step instructions.


  1. Click Create offer.
  2. Select Don’t miss out on free shipping checkout from the list of offer types and click Create.

On the product recommendations editor for checkout page, set up three primary settings.


Settings


General settings


  1. Set the status to Enabled
  2. Edit the Goal amount only after reaching which free shipping will be offered.
  3. Product recommendations: This section displays the complete list of active and inactive recommendations strategies you have created till now that are being used for different offers and widgets you have built for your store.


  • These strategies determine which products are going to be recommended in your widgets.
  • These pre-made/existing strategies are centralized on one dashboard and can be reused for different widgets.
  • Expand the dropdown to access the list of strategies or simply search the strategy you are looking for.
  • Select the strategy that best aligns with your current requirements for the checkout page.
  • Click Edit if you wish to set up a new strategy from scratch or modify the existing one. You will be taken to the Strategies dashboard where you can take the mentioned actions.


a. Strategy name: Start off by giving your strategy a name.

b. Pre-made rules: It consists of 14 pre-made rules or recommendation types which you can select from to show the type of product recommendations you want.

c. Custom rules: It allows you to add custom rules based on your requirements. The products that will meet those requirements will be shown in the widget you are setting up and applying the strategy to. Learn more about custom rules.

d. Pinned product: It allows you to pin a product that you want to highlight and prioritize in product recommendations all the time.


e. Exclusions: You can exclude products from recommendations. Three options to choose from: Exclude products in customers’ cart, Exclude specific products, Exclude by tag, Exclude by collection, Exclude by purchase option, and Exclude by vendor. Click here to know all the details


Please note that product exclusion and pinning are feasible depending on the recommendation type you've selected.


f. Product type: In this section, you can choose the type of product you would like to offer as product recommendations. The available options are One-time purchase only, Subscription only, Both ( One-time and subscription)


  • Offer promotion: In this section, you can enable and offer your customers discount offers on recommended products during checkout.
  • Click Save to let your changes come into effect.


Move back to the offer editor to complete the rest of the settings.


  1. Widget installation: Make sure you add our app as a block in Shopify's checkout editor. Refer to the Installation section and click Learn more to access the step-by-step guide to add free shipping offer to your store's checkout page. You can also refer to our in-built installation guide from the top right corner.



Display


Display settings


  1. Set the display settings of the Free shipping offer section like border, border radius, and overall padding.
  2. Set the messages displayed with the progress bar before and after customers qualify for free shipping including, the bar padding, and alignment.


Take help of the in-built AI-model to come up with captivating messages.


  1. Decide the number of products to be displayed in the upsell offer by dragging the radio button across the bar


  • Configure the display style for desktop and mobile


  1. Configure whether the image source will be the original product or the product variant and simultaneously set the image radius, border, and aspect ratio
  2. Decide what product information will be displayed and how it will be displayed under the Product contenr settings


  • AfterShip Personalization has direct integration with Yotpo product reviews. Select the checkbox if you want to display product reviews via Yotpo integration.
  • You must install the Yotpo product review app to display review ratings to your upsell products.


  1. Configure the logic behind the variant preselection of the recommended products


  • Smart variant match: Automatically displays the best product variant based on the selected products or the cart items
  • First available variant: Displays the first in-stock product variant in the Shopify admin to the shopper
  • Select the checkboxes


a. If you want to Allow customers to change product quantity right from the offer widget.

b. If you want to Show subscription options for the product recommendations.


To display subscription options, you must install a subscription management app such as Recharge to set up subscription type, discount, and delivery frequency. 


  1. Edit the Select variant button text. Clicking this button allows customers to select product size, color, or other options. (Only available when Dynamic Display option is selected)
  2. Edit the Add to cart button text. Clicking the button adds the product to the customer's cart.


Style


Under the Style settings, change how your free shipping offer section will look to the customers and make it brand-consistent.


The section will automatically sync with your Shopify store and match its theme. You can adjust the colors and fonts of the section as per your reference with extensive customization options.





Upsell widget installation on Shopify


Once your checkout upsell free shipping offer settings are completed, you must install the widget on Shopify for the offer to show based on the above settings at checkout.


For installation steps, click Install instructions and read through the steps and implement them accordingly.




  1. Move to the Settings tab and scroll down to Installation and click Copy ID in the top right corner.
  2. Open the Shopify checkout editor. You will automatically land on the Checkout page editor.
  3. Click +Add app block and select AfterShip Smart Offer
  4. Enter the ID you copied in Step 1 in the Widget ID box under App block settings
  5. Toggle on Include block in Shop Pay if your store has activated Shop Pay
  6. Drag-and-drop the widget to your desired location, ideally above Shipping methods for better impressions. Use the preview in the top right to ensure it looks perfect. For A/B testing, only the first enabled version will appear in the preview.
  7. Save the changes.


Shopify admin settings


  1. Navigate to Shipping and delivery in Shopify app settings and open the General shipping rates under Shipping.
  2. Scroll down to Shipping from and click Add rate under the shipping zone for which you want to give a free shipping offer.
  3. Select Use flat rate and add the necessary details of the rate. Keep the price to 0.
  4. Click Add conditional pricing. Choose Based on order price and then add the minimum and maximum price.


The minimum order value must be the same as what is configured (Free shipping goal amount) in the AfterShip Personalization admin.


  1. Click Done and Save the changes.
