Install AfterShip Protection Widget on Shopify

Overview


AfterShip Protection protects your business and your customers' shipments as they fly across the globe with world-class shipping insurance. To enable AfterShip Protection on your Shopify store, you need to install the AfterShip Protection widget on your store.


You can either connect with our support team to get the extension installed (requires collaborator access from your Shopify store) or do it yourself. This article will guide you to install the Protection widget yourself.

Create a test theme


If you’ve requested AfterShip Protection onboarding through our support team as a collaborator, we’ll first create a test theme and install the widget there. Once it’s ready, we’ll ask you to review and approve it before applying the same setup to the main theme.



  1. Go to your Shopify store’s Theme section > Click the three dots {...} icon > Duplicate.
  2. The duplicate theme will show as Copy of ... in Theme library.





Install widget in Shopify cart page and drawer


There are two types of cart types in Shopify, Cart page and Cart drawer. The following steps are applicable to both types.


In the legacy version, installing the AfterShip Protection extension for the cart drawer and cart page required two separate sets of actions, with configuration handled directly in the Shopify theme’s main code files.

In the new version, existing customers only need to enable the AfterShip Protection widget in the Shopify theme editor. Once enabled, the widget will automatically apply to both the cart drawer and the cart page.


For the Duplicated/ Main theme,


  1. Go to your Shopify store’s Theme section.
  2. Click Edit theme.
  3. In the theme editor, navigate to the App embeds tab on the left side panel.
  4. Under App embeds section, search or find the AfterShip Protection widget. Enable it.
  5. Click Save to complete the insertion of the widget.






Cart widget configuration


AfterShip Protection allows merchants to setup the UI of cart extension via the Shopify online theme editor.


  • Find the AfterShip Protection app in the online theme editor, click on it to open the app editor. Update the configuration based on your needs.
  • The description and secondary button are not customizable and is based on your AfterShip Protection service setting. The default descriptions are as follows.

Customization of the AfterShip Protection widget will be available in 2026. If you’d like to customize the widget’s primary or secondary text in the meantime, please contact our support team.


Install widget in Shopify checkout


If you are a Shopify Plus merchant, you can add the checkout widget to increase the opt-in rate.


  1. Go to your Shopify store’s Theme section.
  2. Click Edit theme.
  3. Choose the Checkout page from the page selector at the top.
  4. Add the AfterShip Protection to Shipping block or any position accordingly.
  5. Click Save to complete the insertion of the widget. You can go to your store and try buying a product to check the widget.





Test and launch the test theme with AfterShip Protection widget


Once you're satisfied with the results of the test theme, launch the test theme on your store. AfterShip Protection widget will now be available on your Shopify store.


Now, shoppers will be able to purchase AfterShip Protection to insure their orders, and they will be able to check the AfterShip Protection details on the tracking page for the orders with the Protection add-on and the order confirmation email sent by AfterShip Protection.


The protection fee will be calculated based on the price of each purchased product. And the protection policy status will be 'Inactive' until the order gets shipped.
