How to Use Merge Tags in Notifications

Overview

Merge tags are shortcodes, also known as custom variables and personalization tags, used to insert dynamic content in your return orders email notifications. Merge tags automatically extract unique user, order, and carrier information from the AfterShip Returns database according to the return status.

  • Each return status email has a list of merge tags displayed on the left-hand side of the admin.

  • Each email communicates different information, so make sure to review all the tags available for all the email templates.

List of merge tags

1. |CUSTOMER_NAME|

Display the name of your customer

2. |RMA_ID|

Display the unique RMA id of a return request

3. |ORDER_NUMBER|

Display the associated order number of a return request

4. |STORE_NAME|

Display your store name

5. |REJECT_REASON|

Display the reject reason. It will be displayed only if the return is rejected.

6. |RECEIVED_ITEM_LIST|

Display the list of items for which a customer has raised a return request.

7. |SHIPPING_INSTRUCTIONS|

Display the relevant shipping instructions to ship the return items, according to the Returns Methods chosen by customers.

Note: You can set up shipping instructions for each enabled return method through their respective detail pages.

8. |CONTACT_US|

  • Display your "Contact Us" URL or email

  • To change your "Contact Us" URL or email in AfterShip Returns admin

  1. Go to Returns Page in AfterShip Returns admin.

  2. Click Edit on the upper right-hand side of page.

  3. Under Theme settings, move to Footer > Page links > Contact us.

  4. Add the new link and click Save.

Note: You can either add your contact us page link or input your support email address

9. |RETURNS_ACTION_BUTTON|

The action you want your customers to take after reading the email.

The return action button will be generated automatically based on your returns method, it can be one of the following:

  • Download Returns Label

  • Add Tracking Details

  • View Store Locations

10 .|ACTUAL_REFUND_AMOUNT|

For the Refund to store credit and Refund to original payment method resolution methods RMA request resolved email notifications you can insert this merge tag to provide customers the actual refund amount they are entitled to.

11. |VIEW_REQUEST|

The "View Request" merge tag adds a button to the notification email, directing buyers to the return page where they can check the status of their return request.

12. |EST_REFUND_AMOUNT|

Display the estimated refund value of the RMA.

13. |RECIPIENT_NAME|

Display the name of the gift recipient who has submitted a return request for the original order.

14. |GIFT_RETURN_FORM|

Display the form filled in by the gift recipient to submit the return request.

15. |APPROVAL_MESSAGE|

Display the message left by the merchant when approving a return request on the RMA details page.

16. |RETURN_ITEM_LIST|

Display the list of items included in the return request, along with their product details and return quantities.

17. |EDIT_REASON|

Display the reason a merchant edited a return request. The accompanying email notification is only sent when an item is removed or a return method is changed in the original RMA request.
